I decided to hop on the monthly-subscription box trend because I figured it would be a fun little present to me every month. However, there aren’t many that are available in Canada for an affordable price with 0 shipping costs. But, a friend of mine had an Ipsy subscription and seemed to be pleased so I went down that route.
Ipsy is a small monthly subscription service for makeup and beauty products. They send you a personalized bag of 5 or so products to try (most are small trial sizes, and a few full size products). You also get a cute bag to hold them all in, which is useful for me to get some photos & reviews in before the products get lost in the mess of all the other stuff I have!
First things first, the bag is super cute. It is a dusty rose colour with a constellation design on it, and a little crystal handle for the zipper. It’s small and would be perfect to hold a few essentials to keep in your purse or gym bag for light-makeup (or makeup-free makeup) days. I will definitely be using this bag in the future!
When I opened it up, I was somewhat surprised by how small the products were (some normal sample sizes, and maybe a “deluxe” sample or two). I know for the price I wasn’t expecting a lot, but was still somewhat taken-aback. Then I saw the full-sized highlighter and got excited!
My September Glam bag came with the following:
- Too Faced “Damn Girl!” Mascara in a mini/sample/travel size
- Benefit’s “Gimme Brow” in a sample size
- Coola Mineral Solar Crème in a sample size
- IBOM’s “Lemon Verbena Clay Mask” in a generous size
- OFRA x Madison “Moondance Highligher” in a full size
I love Too Faced products, and we all know how amazing their “Better than Sex” mascara is. I was excited to see this sample size with such fun packaging and design. The brush for this mascara is insane, it is HUGE! They refer to it as the “infinity” brush due to its shape and scope. I currently have lash extensions so I don’t have much use for mascara, but I did do a light coat of this on them to test it out – I can tell that this would create some drama for my natural lashes. This one is a win!
I tried the IBOM mask just after receiving the bag, it made my skin nice and smooth and refreshed feeling. I love the squeeze package and ease of application – I will definitely enjoy using every last drop of this! According to Ipsy, this mask works to “clarify impurities and remove dead skin cells instantly to keep things bright, even, and balanced” using tea tree, red bean and rice husk particles and other soothing ingredients. Love it.
Somehow Ipsy knew that I needed a new highlighter, I never buy them for myself because I was so used to getting sample and deluxe-sample sizes from “Sephora Favourites” collections. But man! They knew. This OFRA x Madison Miller highlighter is beautiful. It is a perfect colour for my light/rosy skin and glides on seamlessly. Even my boyfriend was impressed with the swatches. I am super excited about this product.
As for the other two products, I am satisfied. I already have and use Benefit’s “Gimme Brow” on my light blonde brows. And I am also always looking for a great moisturizing and effective sun-screen to wear under makeup. My go-to now is the Aveeno one they sell in bulk at Costco (its soft, doesn’t leave a gross residue feeling, and smells light and fresh). This Coola product is good, but I will have to use it a bit more to see how much I like it. My first impressions are how light-weight and scentless it is (according to Ipsy it is made of lots of natural, plant based materials).
My final thoughts: for the $12 USD price tag (about $15 Canadian), I am not sure if it is worth it. I will definitely get the October bag and make a more sound judgement from that. The products are great but the sample sizes threw me off a little bit. I guess only time will tell!
Keep on keepin’ on,
